Sarga 68


This is the last Sarga of Sundarakanda.  This Sarga ends with words, "जगाम शांतिं" means  "attained peace or was at peace". That is to say Sita was at peace, being aware that help is at hand based on the confidence given by Hanuma


Alone in the captivity and not knowing the efforts of Rama, Sita was in deep distress. Reasons are many. The threat of Ravana is one. The continuous haranguing of Rakshasis on behalf of Ravana is another. Not knowing the efforts of Rama to rescue her is one more. Unable to see how the sorrows may end is the final fear. The presence of Hanuma changed all that. The explanations and assurances of Hanuma brought peace to her. That was summarized by Hanuma's statement - "जगाम शांतिं मम मैथिलात्मजा"।



Starting with "ततो रावण नीतायाः", the search for Sita was launched in Sarga 1. Hanuma jumped across the ocean and reached Lanka in search of Sita. Having found Sita and taken a remembrance from her, delivering the message to Rama was the only task left to be completed, to claim that he completed his task. Seeing the sorrowful state of Sita he continues his mission. 


But he acts like the compassionate Acharya looking out for his disciple .He was not sent to Lanka as an 'Acharya'. He did not see himself as an 'Acharya'. Effectively presenting himself as a teacher managing a disciple, Hanuma understood the mental state of Sita,  He proceeded to give her confidence. The confidence gained by Sita was such that, she asks Hanuma to lead Rama to a path, wherein Rama would come to Lanka defeat Ravana. 


Effectively a person wallowing in sorrows, has been given a fresh lease of life.

Sita is now at peace. That is not a peace with resignation anticipating fate. Sita is at peace with anticipation.  Hanuma conveys that to Rama. That was the last line of the Sundarakanda. 


Sarga 68 again starts with Hanuma's continuing the narration. In Sarga 66 Rama wanted to hear, the words of charming Sita whose words are equally sweet. "मथुरा मथुरालापा किमाहा मम भामिनि" ; Hanuma relates his conversations with Sita in Sarga 67, and concludes the same in Sarga 68.

.

Now we hear that narration in the Slokas of sixty eighth Sarga. 


||Sloka 68.01||


अथाह मुत्तरं देव्या पुनरुक्तः ससंभ्रमम् |

तव स्नेहान्नरव्याघ्र सौहार्दादनुमान्यवै ||68.01||


स॥ नरव्याघ्र ! तव स्नेहात् सौहार्दात् ससंभ्रम् देव्याः अनुमान्य देव्या उत्तरं पुनः उक्तः ||


Govindaraja says - अथ इत्यादि॥ हे नरव्याघ्र त्वत् स्नेहात् मयि इत्यर्थः | सौहार्दात् सुहृत्भावात्  अप्तत्वात् इति यावत् | अनुमान्य संमान्य |उत्तरं ततः परं उत्तरं कार्यं वा। पुनः देव्या अहं उक्तः इति अन्वयः | ससंभ्रमः गमनत्वरान्वित

नरव्याघ्र -

 o tiger among men

तव स्नेहात् - 

because of love for you

सौहार्दात् - affection

ससंभ्रमम्  - concern (of my going away)

अनुमान्य - 

with respect which is mingled with affection

देव्याः उत्तरं पुनः उक्तः - 

Devi again spoke about actions to be done

'Oh Tiger among men! Because of the love for you and affection, the Devi again spoke, with respect which is mingled with affection, about actions to be done '.||68.01||

एवं बहुविधं वाच्यो रामो दाशरथिस्त्वया |

यथा मामाप्नुयात् शीघ्रं हत्वा रावणमाहवे ||68.02||


स॥  शीघ्रं रावणं हत्वा यथामां अप्नुयात्  ( तथैव) रामः दाशरथिः त्वया बहुविधं वाच्यः |

शीघ्रं रावणं हत्वा - 

quickly killing Ravana 

यथा मां अप्नुयात्  - 

how he may take me back 

 रामः दाशरथिः  - Rama, son of Dasaratha 

त्वया बहुविधं वाच्यः - 

shall be spoken many ways by you

यदि वा मन्यसे वीर वसैकाऽह मरिंदम |

कस्मिंश्चित् संवृते देशे विश्रांतः श्वोगमिष्यसि ||68.03||


स॥ अरिंदम ! वीर ! यदि मन्यसे (तदि) कस्मिंस्वित् एकाहं संवृते प्रदेशे  विश्रान्तः श्वः (त्वं) गमिष्यसि ||

अरिंदम ! वीर !  - 

o crusher of enemies

यदि मन्यसे (तत्) - 

if you think it is possible

कस्मिंस्वित् एकाहं संवृते प्रदेशे -  

at any lonely place  

विश्रान्तः श्वः (त्वं) गमिष्यसि - 

having rested you may go tomorrow

'Oh crusher of enemies ! If you think it is possible take rest at a lonely place for the night and then go.’ ||68.03||

ममचाल्पभाग्यायाः सान्निध्यात् तव वीर्यवान् |

अस्य शोकविपाकस्य मुहूर्तं स्याद्विमोक्षणम् ||68.04||


स॥ तव सान्निध्यात् मम च अल्पभाग्यायाः अस्य शोकविपाकस्य मुहूर्तं विमोक्षणं स्यात्॥

तव सान्निध्यात् - because of your presence here

मम च अल्पभाग्यायाः - this less fortunate one

अस्य शोकविपाकस्य - from this sea of sorrow

मुहूर्तं विमोक्षणं स्यात् - be free for a moment

’Because of your presence here , this less fortunate one will be freed from the sorrow for a while’. ||68.04||  


||Sloka 68.05||


गते हित्वयि विक्रांते पुनरागमनायवै |

प्राणानामपि संदेहो ममस्यान्नात्र संशयः ||68.05||


स॥ विक्रांते  त्वयि गते पुनरागमनाय वै मम प्राणानां अपि संदेहाः स्यात् | अत्र न शंसयः ||

विक्रांते  त्वयि गते -

 o valiant one, after you go  

पुनरागमनाय वै - till you come back  

मम प्राणानां अपि संदेहाः स्यात्  -

my life will also be in doubt

अत्र न संशयः- there is no doubt about this

Oh Valiant one ! When you go  my life will also be in doubt, by the time you come back. There is no doubt about this.’ ||68.05||

तवादर्शनज श्शोको भूयो मां परितापयेत् |

दुःखाद्दुःख पराभूतां दुर्गतां दुःखभागिनीम् ||68.06||


स॥ दुःखात् दुःखभागिनीं दुर्गतां मां  तव अदर्शनजः शोकं भूयः मां परितापयेत् ||

दुःखात् दुःखभागिनीं -

 afflicted by sorrow this unfortunate one 

दुर्गतां - tormented 

 तव अदर्शनजः भूयः -

 not being able to see you will again  

शोकं मां परितापयेत् - 

sorrow will make me lament

अयं च वीर संदेहः तिष्ठतीव ममाग्रतः |

सुमहांस्त्वत् सहायेषु हर्यृक्षेषु हरीश्वर ||68.07||



स॥ वीर हरीश्वर त्वत् सुमहान् सहायेषु हर्यक्षेषु अयं संदेहः च मम अग्रतः तिष्ठति॥

त्वत् सुमहान् सहायेषु हर्यक्षेषु -

कथं नु खलु दुष्पारं तरिष्यंति महोदधिम् ।

तानि हर्यृक्षसैन्यानि तौ वा नरवरात्मजौ ||68.08||


स॥ दुष्पारं महोदधिं तानि हर्यक्ष सैन्यानि वा तौ नरवरात्मजौ कथं नु तरिष्यंति खलु ||

दुष्पारं महोदधिं - ocean which cannot be crossed 

तानि हर्यक्ष सैन्यानि  - those Vanara armies 

वा तौ नरवरात्मजौ  - or those two princes

त्रयाणामेव भूतानां सागरस्यास्य लंघने |

शक्तिः स्याद्वैनतेयस्य तव वा मारुतस्य वा ||68.09||


स॥  अस्य सागरस्य लंघने भूतानां त्रयाणां एव शक्तिः स्यात् वैनतेयस्य तव वा मारुतस्य  वा॥

अस्य सागरस्य लंघने - 

in crossing this ocean 

भूतानां त्रयाणां एव शक्तिः स्यात् -

 among all beings only three have the capability 

 वैनतेयस्य तव वा मारुतस्य  वा - Vainateya, Marut , or you

’Among all living beings , only three namely Vainateya , the Marut , and you are capable of crossing this ocean’.||68.09||

तदस्मिन् कार्य निर्योगे वीरैवं दुरतिक्रमे |

किं पश्यसि समाधानं ब्रूहि कार्यविदां वर ||68.10||


स॥ वीर  ! कार्यविदां वर !  तत् एवं दुरतिक्रमे कार्यनिर्योगे  किं समाधानं पश्यसि ब्रूहि॥

वीर  कार्यविदां वर   - 

o hero, foremost among those  accomplishing tasks 

तत् एवं दुरतिक्रमे कार्यनिर्योगे  -

 for this difficult task

अलांटि ई दुष्करमैन कार्यमु साधिंचुटकु

किं समाधानं पश्यसि ब्रूहि -  

tell me what solution you see

’Oh Hero ! Foremost among those  accomplishing tasks ! What solution you see for this difficult task? Tell me.’ ||68.10||

काममस्य त्वमेवैकः कार्यस्य परिसाधने |

पर्याप्तः परवीरघ्न यशस्यस्ते बलोदयः ||68.11||


स॥ परवीरज अस्य कार्यस्य परिसाधने त्वं एक एव पर्याप्तः कामम् | ते फलोदयः यशस्यः ( भवेत्)||

परवीरज - o slayer of enemy heroes 

अस्य कार्यस्य परिसाधने -

 for accomplishing this task   

त्वं एक एव पर्याप्तः कामम् -

only you alone are enough surely

 ते बलोदयः यशस्यः ( भवेत्) -

 succeeding in this, all the fame will be yours

'Oh Slayer of enemy heroes ! Only you are capable of resolving this task surely. Succeeding in this, all the fame will be yours’. ||68.11||

बलैः समग्रैर्यदि  मां हत्वा रावणमाहवे |

विजयी स्वां पुरीं रामो नयेत् तस्याद्यशस्करम् ||68.12||


स॥ रामः रावणं समग्रैः बलैः आहवे हत्वा विजयी स्वां पुरीं (मां) नयेत् यदि तत् यशस्करं स्यात् ||

रामः - Rama  

समग्रैः बलैः रावणं आहवे हत्वा - 

defeating Ravana along with all his army, 

 विजयी स्वां पुरीं (मां) नयेत् यदि - 

victoriously takes me back to his city

 तत् यशस्करं स्यात् - 

that will be appropriate for him

’If Rama , defeating Ravana along with all his army, being victorious, and then he takes me back to his city , that will be appropriate for him’. ||68.12||


This is echoing Sita's wish that name and fame of her husband are very high in her mind. She does not relish her being united with Rama in any other way than , Rama defeating Ravana,, then taking her back. This message too is being conveyed by Hanuman, who seemed to have completely for gotten this when he told Vanara elders , that they should carry Sita to Rama, instead of simply conveying the message that Sita is safe.

यथाऽहं तस्य वीरस्य वनादुपथिना हृता |

रक्षसा तद्भया देव तथा नार्हति राघवः ||68.13||


स॥ अहं रक्षसा वीरस्य उपाधिना यथा हृता तथा तत् भयादेव राघवः न अर्हति॥

रक्षसा वीरस्य - by the Rakshasa

उपाधिना यथा अहं  हृता - 

the way I have been abducted using devious means

तथा तत् भयादेव - 

similarly in a secret way  

राघवः न अर्हति -

 Rama shall not take me bac

’I have been abducted by the Rakshasa using devious means.  Rama shall not take me back with fear ( secretly)” ||68.13||

बलैस्तु संकुलां कृत्वा लंकां परबलार्दनः |

मां नयेद्यदि काकुत्स्थः तत् तस्य सदृशं भवेत् ||68.14||


स॥ परबलार्दनः काकुत्स्थः लंकां शरैः संकुलं कृत्वा माम् नयेत् यदि तत् तस्य सदृशं भवेत्॥

Kakutstha, the slayer of the enemy armies,

लंकां शरैः संकुलं कृत्वा -

 stirring Lanka with his arrows

that will be appropriate for him

स॥ तत् महात्मनः आहवशूरस्य तस्य अनुरूपं विक्रान्तं यथा भवेत् तथैव त्वं उपपादय॥

येषां नोपरिनाधस्तान् नतिर्यक् सज्जते गतिः |

न च कर्मसु सीदंति महत्स्वमित तेजसः ||68.19||


स॥ येषां गतिः उपरि न सज्जते। अधस्तात् न। तिर्यक् न | अमित तेजसः महत् सु कर्मसु न सीदन्ति॥

येषां गतिः उपरि न सज्जते  -

 can go up without any obstruction

अधस्तात्  - can go down too.

 तिर्यक्  - can go in any other direction

अमित तेजसः - 

brilliant ones

महत् सु कर्मसु न सीदन्ति- 

can undertake any task without difficulty

They can go up without any obstruction. They can go down too .They can go in any other direction. These brilliant ones can undertake any task without difficulty’.||68.19||

असकृत्तैर्महाभागैः वानरैर्बलदर्पितैः |

प्रदक्षिणीकृता भूमि र्वायुमार्गानुसारिभिः ||68.20||


स॥ महाभागैः बलदर्पितैः वायुमार्गानुसारिभिः तैः वानरैः भूमिः प्रदक्षिणी कृता॥

महाभागैः बलदर्पितैः - 

great Vanaras, who are proud of their might

वायुमार्गानुसारिभिः - 

take to the arial path 

तैः वानरैः - by those Vanaras 

भूमिः प्रदक्षिणी कृता - 

earth has been circumbulated

’These great Vanaras, who are proud of their might, went  around the earth travelling in the aerial path’. ||68.20||


||Sloka 68.21||


मद्विशिष्ठाश्च तुल्याश्च संति तत्र वनौकसः |

मत्तः प्रत्यवरः कश्चिन्नास्ति सुग्रीव सन्निधौ ||68.21||


स॥ तत्र सुग्रीव सन्निधौ  मत् विशिष्ठाश्च तुल्याश्च संति | मत्तः प्रत्यवरः कश्चित् नास्ति॥

तत्र सुग्रीव सन्निधौ  - 

in the court of Sugriva  

मत् विशिष्ठाश्च तुल्याश्च संति  - 

there are those who are better than me or equal to me.

मत्तः प्रत्यवरः - 

less powerful than me

कश्चित् नास्ति - none is there

’In the court of Sugriva there are those who are better than me or equal to me. There is none who is less powerful than me’. ||68.21||


That there is no one as powerful and intelligent as Hanuma in Hanuma

s court, is something we heard from Jambavan; Here Hanuma is portraying the opposite. This is only Hanuman's large heartedness.

अहं तावदिह प्राप्तः किं पुनस्ते महाबलाः |

नहि प्रकृष्टाः प्रेष्यंते प्रेष्यंते हीतरे जनाः॥68.22||


स॥ अहं तावत् इह अनुप्राप्तः। महबलाः ते किं पुनः | प्रकृष्टाः न प्रेष्यंते हि | इतरे जनाः प्रेष्यंते हि॥

अहं तावत् इह अनुप्राप्तः - 

if I was able to come here

 महबलाः ते किं पुनः - 

what to say of the highly powerful ones?

प्रकृष्टाः न प्रेष्यंते हि  -

 superior ones are indeed not sent

इतरे जनाः प्रेष्यंते हि - 

only the other people are sent

 ’If I have come here, what to say of the highly powerful ones. Superiors are indeed not sent. Only the other people are sent’. ||68.22||

तदलं परिपातेन देवि मन्युर्व्यपैतु ते |

एकोत्पातेन  वै लंका मेष्यंति हरियूथपाः ||68.23||


स॥ देवी तत् परितापेन अलं | ते शोकः व्यपैतु। ते हरियूथपाः एकोत्पातेन लंकां एष्यंति॥


Rama Tika says  - तदिति॥ यतः एकोत्पातेन केवलोत्प्लवनेन  हरियूथपाः  लंकामेष्यन्ति तत् तस्मात् हेतोः परितापेन अलं , न कर्तव्यं इत्यर्थः॥

देवी तत् परितापेन अलं  - 

oh divine lady, enough of such lamentation

ते शोकः व्यपैतु  - 

let your sorrow end

ते हरियूथपाः एकोत्पातेन -

 in one jump the Vanara army 

लंकां एष्यंति - 

can reach Lanka

’Oh Divine lady ! Enough of such lamentation. Let your sorrow end. The Vanara army will reach Lanka in one jump’. ||68.23||


Vanara chiefs can reach the Lanka  in one jump. Hence there is no need for any concern reach. This Hanuma's prayer to Sita.  In second Sarga too Hanuman mused about the ability of at most three to Lanka. But after seeing Sitamma in sorrow, he needed to assure her. Accordingly now he says that in Sugriva's court, there are many who are more powerful than Hanuma etc. so as to give confidence to her

ममपृष्ठगतौ तौ च चंद्रसूर्याविवोदितौ |

त्वत्सकाशं  महाभागे नृशिंहवागमिष्यतः ||68.24||


स॥ महाभागे नृसिंहौ तौ च मम पृष्ठगतौ उदितौ चन्द्रसूर्याविव त्वत् सकाशं आगमिष्यतः॥

महाभागे नृसिंहौ तौ च - 

o noble one, both of them, the lions among men

मम पृष्ठगतौ -  sitting on my back 

उदितौ चन्द्रसूर्याविव - 

like rising Sun and moon

त्वत् सकाशं आगमिष्यतः -

 will be here for you

’Oh Noble one ! Both of them , the lions among men, sitting on my back shining like Sun and moon will reach here soon.’ ||68.24||

अरिघ्नं सिंहसंकाशं क्षिप्रं द्रक्ष्यसि राघवं |

लक्ष्मणं च धनुष्पाणिं लंकाद्वारमुपस्थितम् ||68.25||

नखदंष्ट्रायुधान्  वीरान् सिंहशार्दूलविक्रमान् |

वानरान् वारणेंद्राभान् क्षिप्रं द्रक्ष्यसि संगतान् ||68.26||

तवापि शोकेन तदाऽभिपीडिता ||68.29||


स॥ ततः तव शोकेनापि तदा अभिपीडिता मैथिलात्मजा  मया अदीनभाषिणा  शिवाभिः इष्टभिः मम वाग्भिः अभिप्रसादिता शांतिं जगाम॥


Tilaka TIka says- पूर्वमुक्तया मदुक्त्या श्रुतेन त्वत् शोकेन अतिपीडिता अपि अदीनभाषिणी सा मया शिवाभी इष्टिभिः अभिप्रसादिता शान्तिं दुःखनिवृत्तिमुवाह। प्राप्तेत्यर्थः॥


Govindaraja says - ततो मयेति। तवशोकेनापि नैव दंशानित्यादि मदुक्त्या श्रुतेन मम पुरस्तात् अभिपीडिता अदीनभाषिणा  मया शिवाभिः इष्टाभिः वाग्भिः अभिप्रसादिता शान्तिं दुःखनिवृत्तिं जगाम॥

then the princess of Mithila, Sita who was troubled by the grief of (separation from) you 

मया अदीनभाषिणा  - 

with my pleasing words 

शिवाभिः इष्टभिः - auspicious and well-meaning words 

मम वाग्भिः अभिप्रसादिता - 

pleased with words spoken by me

शांतिं जगाम - became peaceful

’Then the princess of Mithila, Sita who was troubled by the grief of (separation from) you, pleased with the pleasing auspicious and well-meaning words spoken by me, became peaceful’ ||68.29||


Thus, the Sarga ends with the sloka, stating that Sita felt at ease and at peace. This is also the end of Sundarakanda.


"जगामशांतिं" - that she became peaceful or free of her sorrows is the most important  consequence of Sundarakanda , has already been noted. This sentence only added to the lore of Sundarakanda.


Just before the start of Sundarakanda, the Ramayana story was full of discordant notes.  The discordant notes enveloped the fates of all.


We heard the woes of Rama, in his own words as one who lost his kingdom, who lost his friend Jatayu and who lost his wife too. We heard about Vanara's, moving in Southern direction, wondering how to cross the ocean in the search of Sita.

The readers of Ramayana too will also be carrying those fears of Kishkindha Kanda. 


At that moment Hanuma steps forward. As he gets set and soars into the skies in search of Sita, everybody’s hopes also soar along with Hanuma. As Hanuma flies through the clouds, the clouds surrounding the story too are lifted. The weight on everybody's mind too lightens.


When Hanuma comes back saying"दृष्ठा देवी", the cloud on Vanaras minds lifted. They got their relief.


Help for bringing Sita was the commitment of Sugriva. Hanuma's "नियतां अक्षतां देवीं",

made Sugriva realize that the goal is at hand. He gets that relief of realizing that his commitment will be made good.


Hanuma's "नियतां अक्षतां देवींÓ, meant something special for the two princes. It is an anxiously awaited news for Rama and Lakshmana. Rama and Lakshmana, who saw Sita in the jewel sent by her, are now at peace realizing that Sita is safe, and is waiting for being rescued. 

 

Thus, everyone other than the Rakshasas in Ramayana are at peace, realizing that the final step is at a stone throw.


On the same token, all those absorbed in the story of Sundarakanda, and absorbed in the Sundarakanda Parayana too, will have mental burdens reduced and achieve peace.

That is the belief coming from ages. 


इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे आदिकाव्ये वाल्मीकीये 

चतुर्विंशत् सहस्रिकायां संहितायाम्

श्रीमत्सुंदरकांडे अष्टषष्टितमस्सर्गः॥

श्रीसुंदरकांडः समाप्तः॥

हरि ओम् तत सत्॥

सर्वं श्री रामचंद्रार्पणमस्तु॥


Thus ends the sixty eighth Sarga of Sundarakanda. That is also the end of Sundarakanda in Ramayana, the first ever Sanskrit poem composed in Sanskrit by the first poet sage Valmiki.
