Sundarakanda

Sarga 61


"nirviṣayaṁ ca cakruḥ" means, “destroyed without a second thought.

What did they destroy?  mahāvanaṁ - the great forest.

The great forest in this context is "madhuvanaṁ", a honey grove.

The Sarga is about how that  honey grove madhuvanaṁ got destroyed 


Sarga 61 starts with the line, "tatō jāmbavatō vākyaṁ agr̥hṇanta vanaukasaḥ"(61.01)||;

meaning that "then Jambavan's words were accepted by the Vanaras". Those words of Jambavan were about finding out  Rama's thoughts on further course of action. Then all the Vanaras take to skies, to reach the Prasaravana hill, where Rama, Lakshmana and Sugriva are waiting


Vanaras were flying back in happy mood, having accomplished their goal. The feeling of accomplishment meant, that their minds too, freed from the search, are virtually flying. Thus, the freed mind loses its way on seeing Madhuvan.


Seeker, in search of Self or liberation, may also lose his way. This Sarga reveals how easy is it for one to lose his way.


In Gita Arjuna asks Bhagavan, how to control this mind which is so fickle. Krishna says, "asaṁśayaṁ mahābāhō", without doubt, he says it is difficult to control.  "suduṣkaraṁ"- very difficult. But not impossible. Krishna says "abhyāsēna tu kauntēyā", "Arjuna, the control comes with practice".


Here in this incident of Madhuvan, with Hanuma and Angada etc leading the way, we see clearly , how fickle indeed the mind is. 

And we also see how difficult it is to control the same.

|| tatō jāmbavatō vākyamagr̥ḥṇanta vanaukasaḥ|

aṅgadapramukhā vīrā hanumāṁśca mahākapiḥ||61.01||


sa|| tataḥ aṅgadapramukhāḥ vanaukasaḥ mahākapiḥ hanumaṁtaścajāṁbavataḥ vākyaṁ agr̥hṇaṁta||

tataḥ aṅgadapramukhāḥ vanaukasaḥ - 

then Angada and other Vanara leaders

mahākapiḥ hanumaṁtaśca - 

great Vanara Hanuma too

jāṁbavataḥ vākyaṁ agr̥hṇaṁta - 

accepted the words of Jambavan.

"Then Angada and other leaders,  and other wanderers of the forest including Hanuman accepted the words of great Vanara Jambavan. " ||61.01||

prītimantaḥ tataḥ sarvē vāyuputtra purassarāḥ|

mahēṁdrādriṁ parityajya pupluvuḥ plavagarṣabhāḥ||61.02||

Rama Tika says- prītimanta iti| ākāśaṁ chādayanta iva mattā mahajagajā iva mahākāyāḥ bhūtaiḥ siddhādibhiḥ sabhājyamānaṁ pūjyamānaṁ hanūmantaṁ dr̥ṣṭibhiḥ  animiṣa avalōkanaiḥ  vahanta iva samr̥ddhaḥ samr̥ddhaḥ saṁpannaḥ arthaḥ prayōjanaṁ ēṣāṁ tē karmasiddhibhiḥ sītādarśana laṁkādahana ādibhiḥ unnatāḥ uddhata cittāḥ vāyuputra purassarāḥ prītimantaḥ sarvē vānarāḥ rāghavē rāghavasya kārya siddhiṁkartuṁ saṁpādayituṁ paraṁaṁ yaśaḥ samādāya prāpya mahēndrāt samutpatya pupluvuḥ jagmuḥ| caturṇāmēkānvayī||2-4||

tataḥ sarvē plavagarṣabhāḥ prītimantaḥ - 

All of the Vanaras, very pleased

mahēṁdrādriṁ parityajya -

 left Mahendra mountain

vāyuputtra purassarāḥ pupluvuḥ -

 led by  Hanuman flew

"All of the Vanaras, who were very pleased  left Mahendra mountain led by  Hanuman and flew into the sky. " ||61.02||

mērumaṁdarasaṁkāśā mattā iva mahāgajāḥ|

chādayaṁta ivākāśaṁ mahākāyā mahābalāḥ||61.03||

resembling the mountains Meru and Mandara

like elephants in the rut

mahābalāḥ mahākāyā - 

mighty with huge bodies 

( pupluvuḥ - flew into the sky)

sabhājyamānaṁ bhūtaiḥ taṁ ātmavaṁtaṁ mahābalam|

hanūmaṁtaṁ mahāvēgaṁ vahaṁta iva dr̥ṣṭibhiḥ ||61.04||

(tē) bhūtaiḥ sabhājyamānaṁ - praised by all beings 

ātmavaṁtaṁ mahābalam - self-confident mighty

mahāvēgaṁ hanūmaṁtaṁ  - speedy Hanuman 

vahaṁta iva dr̥ṣṭibhiḥ - seen with an unblinking eye

"Praised by all beings that self-confident mighty Hanuman flying at great speeds was seen by them without blinking." ||61.04||

rāghavēcārthanirvr̥ttiṁ kartuṁ ca paramaṁ yaśaḥ|

samādhāya samr̥ddhārthāḥ karmasiddhibhirunnatāḥ||61.05||


sa|| (tē) rāghavē ca artha nirvr̥ttiṁ samādhāya samr̥ddhārthāḥ karmasiddhibhiḥ unnatāḥ  paramaṁ yaśaḥ kartuṁ (pupluvuḥ ) || 


Govindaraja Tikaa says - sabhājyamānaṁ saṁpūjyamānaṁ | vahanta iva dr̥ṣṭibhiriti| artha nirvr̥ttiṁ artha siddhiṁ samādhāya niścitya saṁkalpaṁ vā samr̥ddhārthāḥ siddhakāryāḥ karma siddhibhiḥ kārya siddhibhiḥ unnatāḥ |itarēbhya utkr̥ṣṭāḥ |rāmapratīkārē rāma pratyupakārē | pupluvuriti pūrvēṇa saṁbandhaḥ||


unnatāḥ - means being on a high.

Poet says the Vanaras flying back were on a high, because of having accomplished their task. 


||Sloka meanings||


rāghavē ca artha nirvr̥ttiṁ samādhāya - 

to inform Rama about completed tasks 

samr̥ddhārthāḥ karmasiddhibhiḥ unnatāḥ  - 

by those who completed their tasks successfully , who were high,   

paramaṁ yaśaḥ kartuṁ (pupluvuḥ )- 

to work to attain fame 

(pupluvuḥ ) - flew into the sky

"To inform Rama about completed tasks, by those who completed their tasks successfully , who were high, who wanted to work to attain fame , they flew into the sky." ||61.05||

priyākhyānōnmukhāḥ sarvē sarvē yuddhābhinaṁdinaḥ|

sarvē rāmapratīkārē niścitārdhā manasvinaḥ||61.06||


sa|| sarvē priyākhyānōnmukhāḥ sarvē yuddhābhinaṁdinaḥ sarvē rāmapratīkārē niścitārdhā manasvinaḥ ||


Rama Tika says- rāma pratīkārē rāma kartavyē rāvaṇa pratīkārē niścitārthāḥ abhūvan iti śēṣaḥ|


||Sloka meanings||


sarvē priyākhyānōnmukhāḥ - 

all of them desirous of telling the story of success

priyamaina vārta aṁdiṁcuṭaku tahatahalāḍucunnavāru

sarvē yuddhābhinaṁdinaḥ - 

all of them were anxious to fight a war

sarvē rāmapratīkārē -  

all of them determined to avenge Ravana's misdeeds 

niścitārdhā manasvinaḥ- with a mind that is made up 

( pupluvuḥ - flew into the skyegiriri)


||Sloka summary||


"All of them were anxious to fight a war. All of them were determined to please Rama." ||61.06||   


Here poet says that  all Vanaras  were anxious to fight a war. All of them determined to avenge Ravana's misdeeds. We hear similar comment by Vibhishana in Sarga 52 about Ravana's Rakshasas. There Vibhishana tells Ravana, that all the Rakshasa are ready for a war and that by killing Hanuma, he would be  depriving them of a chance for war.

plavamānāḥ khamāplutya tatastē kānanaukasaḥ|

naṁdanōpamamāsēdurvanaṁ  drumalatāyutam||61.07||


sa|| tataḥ tē kānanaukasaḥ khaṁ āplutya plavamānāḥ drumalayatāyutaṁ nandanōpamam vanaṁ āsēduḥ||

tataḥ tē kānanaukasaḥ khaṁ āplutya- 

then the  forest dwellers leaping up in the sky

plavamānāḥ - 

flying through 

drumalayatāyutaṁ - 

full of trees and creepers

nandanōpamam vanaṁ āsēduḥ- 

saw a grove like Indra's Nandana grove

"Then the forest dwellers leaping and rising up in the sky entered the garden which is full of trees and creepers which is like Indra's garden. " ||61.07||

yattanmadhuvanaṁ nāma sugrīvasyābhirakṣitam|

adhr̥ṣyaṁ  sarvabhūtānāṁ sarvabhūtamanōharam ||61.08||


sa|| adhr̥ṣyaṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ abhirakṣitaṁ sarvabhūta manōharaṁ yat sugrīvasya madhuvanaṁ nāma tat||

that which was difficult to access

sarvabhūtānāṁ abhirakṣitaṁ - 

well protected from all beings

sarvabhūta manōharaṁ - 

enchanting to all beings

beautiful garden of Sugriva is called Madhuvan

yadrakṣati mahāvīryaḥ sadā dadimukhaḥ kapiḥ|

mātulaḥ kapimukhyasya  sugrīvasya mahātmanaḥ||61.09||

vānarā vānarēndrasya manaḥ kāṁtatamaṁ mahat||61.10||

tē vānarāḥ - those Vanaras  

vānarēndrasya  -  of the king

manaḥ klāṁtatamaṁ mahat tat vanaṁ upāgamya -

approaching that grove which is very enchanting 

paramōtkaṭāḥ babhūvuḥ -

 became highly desirous  of tasting honey .

"The Vanaras, approaching the great enchanting garden of the king of Vanaras, were highly desirous of tasting the honey of the groves." ||61.10||

jumped from the ground to the top of the trees

rudaṁta manyaḥ praṇudannupaiti 

nudaṁtamanyaḥ praṇadannupaiti||61.17||

prahasan upaiti- others approached him laughing

hasantaṁ anyaḥ -  to the one who was laughing 

prarudan upaiti - another went roaring  

rudaṁtaṁ anyaḥ - one was roaring

praṇudan  upaiti-  another was pushing

nudantaṁ - one was encouraging

anyaḥ praṇadan upaiti- another fell over and was shouting

with various activities due to excessive drinking

there was none who was not intoxicated

atra kaścit tr̥ptaḥ babhūva iti  na - 

there was none who was satisfied

 drumāṁśca vidhvaṁsitapattrapuṣpān|

samīkṣya kōpāddadhivaktranāmā

 nivārayāmāsa kapiḥ kapīṁstān||61.19||


sa|| tataḥ dadhivaktranāmā kapiḥ  tat vanaṁ vidhvaṁsitapatrapuṣpān drumāṁśca samīkṣya kōpāt paribhakṣyamāṇam tān kapīn nivārayāmāsa||”

then Vanara by name Dadhivaktra 

vidhvaṁsita patrapuṣpān drumāṁśca - 

leaves, flowers and trees which were destroyed

paribhakṣyamāṇam tān kapīn - 

those Vanaras who were drinking  

kōpāt nivārayāmāsa - 

with anger started stopping them

some he quarreled

tahaiva kāṁścit sāmnā upajagāma - 

some he approached in a conciliatory manner.

drunk, all the Vanaras together 

nakhaiḥ tudantaḥ  daśanaiḥ dasantaḥ - 

scratched with their nails. Bit with their teeth.

talaiśca pādaiśca taṁ kapiṁ samāpayantaḥ - 

almost killed the Vanara with their hands and feet

mahāvanaṁ - that great garden 

(tē sarvē)  nirviṣayaṁ cakr̥ḥ- ( all of them) looted fully

"Drunk, they all together scratched with their nails. Bit with their teeth. They almost killed the Vanara with their hands and feet. They looted the garden completely." ||61.23|| 


Without realizing their fault, some roared, some held and pulled Dadhimukha. The drunk Vanara's scratched with their nails and bit with their teeth. They kicked with their hands and feet. They looted the garden completely without a thought.


In Sarga 55, we heard about consequences of uncontrolled anger.

Here we have a demonstration of a similar uncontrolled mental state.

Being drunk, actions preventing them spark further destruction.


Thus ends Sarga sixty-one of Sundarakanda.

Sundarakanda

Sarga 61


"nirviṣayaṁ ca cakruḥ" means, “destroyed without a second thought.

What did they destroy?  mahāvanaṁ - the great forest.

The great forest in this context is "madhuvanaṁ", a honey grove.

The Sarga is about how that  honey grove madhuvanaṁ got destroyed 


Sarga 61 starts with the line, "tatō jāmbavatō vākyaṁ agr̥hṇanta vanaukasaḥ"(61.01)||;

meaning that "then Jambavan's words were accepted by the Vanaras". Those words of Jambavan were about finding out  Rama's thoughts on further course of action. Then all the Vanaras take to skies, to reach the Prasaravana hill, where Rama, Lakshmana and Sugriva are waiting


Vanaras were flying back in happy mood, having accomplished their goal. The feeling of accomplishment meant, that their minds too, freed from the search, are virtually flying. Thus, the freed mind loses its way on seeing Madhuvan.


Seeker, in search of Self or liberation, may also lose his way. This Sarga reveals how easy is it for one to lose his way.


In Gita Arjuna asks Bhagavan, how to control this mind which is so fickle. Krishna says, "asaṁśayaṁ mahābāhō", without doubt, he says it is difficult to control.  "suduṣkaraṁ"- very difficult. But not impossible. Krishna says "abhyāsēna tu kauntēyā", "Arjuna, the control comes with practice".


Here in this incident of Madhuvan, with Hanuma and Angada etc leading the way, we see clearly , how fickle indeed the mind is. 

And we also see how difficult it is to control the same.

unnatāḥ - means being on a high.

Poet says the Vanaras flying back were on a high, because of having accomplished their task.

Here poet says that  all Vanaras  were anxious to fight a war. All of them determined to avenge Ravana's misdeeds. We hear similar comment by Vibhishana in Sarga 52 about Ravana's Rakshasas. There Vibhishana tells Ravana, that all the Rakshasa are ready for a war and that by killing Hanuma, he would be  depriving them of a chance for war.

leaves, flowers and trees which were destroyed

 seeing that grove  

paribhakṣyamāṇam tān kapīn - 

those Vanaras who were drinking  

kōpāt nivārayāmāsa -

from the intoxicated powerful Vanaras

without seeing the fault, some held and pulled him

talaiśca pādaiśca samāpayaṁtaḥ|

sa|| samagrāḥ kapayaḥ madāt nakhaiḥ tudantaḥ | daśanaiḥ dasantaḥ| talaiśca pādaiśca taṁ kapiṁ samāpayantaḥ | (tē sarvē)  mahāvanaṁ nirviṣayaṁ cakr̥ḥ||


Tilaka Tika says- samāpayantaḥ mr̥takalpaṁ kurvantaḥ| nirviṣayaṁ nirgata madhu phalādi bhōjyam|

samagrāḥ kapayaḥ madāt - 

drunk, all the Vanaras together 

nakhaiḥ tudantaḥ  daśanaiḥ dasantaḥ - 

scratched with their nails. Bit with their teeth.

talaiśca pādaiśca taṁ kapiṁ samāpayantaḥ - 

almost killed the Vanara with their hands and feet

mahāvanaṁ - that great garden 

(tē sarvē)  nirviṣayaṁ cakr̥ḥ- ( all of them) looted fully

"Drunk, they all together scratched with their nails. Bit with their teeth. They almost killed the Vanara with their hands and feet. They looted the garden completely." ||61.23|| 


Without realizing their fault, some roared, some held and pulled Dadhimukha. The drunk Vanara's scratched with their nails and bit with their teeth. They kicked with their hands and feet. They looted the garden completely without a thought.


In Sarga 55, we heard about consequences of uncontrolled anger.

Here we have a demonstration of a similar uncontrolled mental state.

Being drunk, actions preventing them spark further destruction.


Thus ends Sarga sixty-one of Sundarakanda.
